Camping Chairs - Folding Camp Chair| Backpacking| Travel

How to select a camp chair, folding camp chair, travel chair, backpacking chair, camping lounge chair, heavy duty camping chair, hiking chair, or lightweight chair

Camping Chairs

You get back from your hike and you just want to sit down and take a load off.  You look around and find that the only place you are going to be sitting is on the floor.  Now even if it isn’t too dirty, it is not going to be comfortable.  Camping chairs can make all the difference after a long day.  Now, they might not be as comfortable as your couch at home but there is a large selection of camping chairs which can make your experience much more enjoyable.  Let’s go through the options of which there are several.  Again, you will want to consider the cost of carrying around a lounge chair versus the comfort level that you are seeking in a camping lounge chair.

Camping Stools

These are the most basic of the options for a camping chair or a backpacking chair.  They are simply a place to sit with no bells and whistles.  Basically a mini bench lacking any type of back support.  These are lightweight and often quite sturdy, easily holding up to 200 pounds and often more.  If you are looking for a no frills travel chair, this is your best bet.

Middle of the road chairs

If a stool won’t do it for you then try moving up to the next level in folding camping chairs.  The most basic chairs in this category are stools with back support.  They are nothing fancy but can be quite versatile, hold around 200 pounds or more and still weigh less than 2 pounds.  These are a good option for someone who wants to carry along a chair on a hike or a walk without being too burdened by the additional weight.  Making our way up to the top end of this category we find some more substantial chairs that can way up to 7 or 8 pounds and offer cup holders and other furnishings.  Now you are definitely going to be sacrificing as far as weight goes but you will be gaining in comfort.  You might consider one of these for a trip that involves shorter walks and more time relaxing by the tent.

Top of the line chairs

When you move into this category, you are probably not going to carry these chairs on a hike.  These are heavy duty camping chairs.  If you are going to have an automobile nearby, you will want to leave the chair and come back for it when you need it.  Some of the fancier versions can weigh up to 10 pounds or more and cost nearly $100 and up.  They can hold well over 200 pounds and can often be extremely comfortable but these aren’t the kinds of chairs that you will be taking with you on a hike.

So, after looking at the options, most campers looking for a solid, comfortable chair that is lightweight and durable will probably want to go with one of the middle of the road options on the lower end of the spectrum.  Something like a camping stool with back support is probably going to be the best option when you take all of the factors into account.
